Reclaiming Ambition - Email Header Design

Read Time: 4 Minutes

Hi There,

I have a major love/hate relationship with LinkedIn.

On one hand, my LinkedIn profile has helped me to form a unique professional identity outside of my resume and portfolio. I’ve been able to share career milestones and wins with a larger network and make connections with people I probably would have never met otherwise.

On the other hand, LinkedIn can be exhausting. When your feed is full of other people sharing their wins, it can stir up some serious impostor syndrome, especially if you’re navigating a slow season in your career or dealing with unemployment.

So, should we just delete LinkedIn and go for a nature walk? Ideally, yes.

But the truth is, LinkedIn has become a critical tool, nearly as important as your resume. So if you can’t beat it, why not learn how to use it in a way that actually works for you?

I created a short video that walks you through 5 simple and actionable tips to help you stand out on LinkedIn without the pressure of having to “go viral” or become a “LinkedIn expert.” I’m using my own profile as an example so you can see how these changes have impacted me!

Don’t have time to watch the video? Here’s a breakdown of my five tips:

1️⃣ It's all about the photos: Your profile and cover images should be professional and aligned with your career objectives (what you do or where you do it). I know that not everyone has access to professional headshots, and that’s okay! Here are some tips for taking a great professional photo at home.

2️⃣ Craft an engaging headline: Your headline doesn’t have to just state your job title. Use it to express how you see your role and what impact you make. For example, instead of “Project Manager at Tech Company X,” you could write: “Experienced Project Manager helping Canadian tech companies thrive 🇨🇦💻”

3️⃣ Tell your story: The about section is your opportunity to showcase your personality and provide context beyond your job titles and experience. Think of it as a personal elevator pitch. Go beyond the basics, share your career journey, motivations, and values. Try drafting a few versions, reading them aloud, and asking a friend or colleague to give feedback.

4️⃣ Highlight your skills: Adding skills to your profile is a great way to feature your strengths, as well as help recruiters and hiring managers assess your capabilities and match you with the right role. Bonus: it also improves how LinkedIn’s algorithm matches you with job opportunities. This section adds credibility and positions you as a strong candidate.

5️⃣ Ask for recommendations: It might feel intimidating to ask for a recommendation, but it’s a powerful way to validate your experience. Consider offering a recommendation exchange or drafting a message for someone to edit. Be thoughtful about who you ask, and try to make the request timely (like asking a colleague you just finished a big project with).

I’d love to hear if you apply any of these tips and if they help you get more out of LinkedIn! Feel free to send me a note if you have your own LinkedIn tip you’d like to share.

Before we wrap up, I also have a quick favour to ask you!

Can you reply to this email with a quick “Hello!” This will help Gmail and other email providers keep this email out of the Promotions folder and in your primary inbox.

I really appreciate it 💚

Cheering you on,

Jocelyn
